Stephani tried to explain to the Jane why she had to leave.

“This is my summer home,” he said.  “Always was, always will be.”

“Well, my family migrated across an entire ocean,” said Jane.  ” That’s how we sparrows roll.  We’re adventurers.”

“Juncos like things the same. That’s why we’ve been coming here for centuries.”

“How do you know what Juncos did centuries ago?”  Jane put her beak it the air and flitted her tail.  “You have a brain smaller than a wheat seed.”

“Have you never heard of imprints?” Stephani ruffed his feathers.  “I learned how to behave like a Junco when I was still in the egg.”

“Well, sparrows know how to adapt.  That’s why we’re everywhere.”

“Juncos only live in cities.  We like noise and excitement.”

Jane opened her beak as if to speak, closed it, and flitted off.  No point in telling him Juncos love the forest, she thought.  The last Junco I met gave me that imprint story insisting his kind only lives in conifers.
