Scout and Meowgi waited all day for Goldy, their only sister, to return.

“She’s been gone a long time,” Scout moped.

Scout knew Meowgi spent most nights outside, hunting.  As for Scout, he was only allowed into the fenced yard.  Meowgi slinked under the fence, or on warm nights jumped up and sat on the fence post crooning at a full moon.  Scout could do neither of these things, so he contented himself with what he freedom he had, and looked forward to long walk with Mother.  He tolerated the leash because Mother felt more secure when she was tied to him.

“She always comes back,” sighed Meowgi.  “Just like I always come back.

Meowgi often grew impatient with Scout’s panic attacks.  Life has a way of working out for the best.  Why couldn’t Scout see that?  How could two brothers be so different.

“Goldy is out there on only two legs,” Scout turned in a circle to the left and pressed his nose against the window.

“Sit,” Meowgi trying hard to imitate the commanding tone of Mother’s voice. “Come on.  You’ve seen her jump and run. She’ll be fine.” Still and all, Meowgi inched closer to the window and purred to himself, breathe in, breathe out, simple things are best, all good things come to those who wait… and other wise sayings he learned from Mother.

Goldy burst through the door, slammed her heavy bag on the floor and threw her coat on the chair. Her cheeks flushed and droplets wetted the area between her nose and lip.  She squeezed her brothers to her cheeks.

“Is it normal to be that color?” Said Scout.

Meowgi rolled his eyes. “One worry ends and another begins for you.  She seems fine to me.” Underneath his purry tantric breathing Meowgi wondered if Goldy would ever get her fur.  Surely she covering her with layers and layers of cloth was not the way she would be forced to live her life.
