Fifty Day: Riot

I started a challenge to write a story that is exactly 50 words! Thank you, Boy with a Hat. Not that he set up a formal challenge, but it was his idea. And his writing is worth checking out. So please click the link and find out what he’s up to.

So how to proceed? For the most part, I’m using my character inspiration, Dorothy Astoria’s The Name Book. For Week 9, I decided to write about a boy named Riot. Last week, I saw a blurb in the news about a teen named Riot. And, Saturday I met the mother of an eight-year-old with that same name. She explained to me that Riot also means an abundant, unrestrained joy. I love the meaning of names. Would it be a burden to have a name like Riot and be extremely shy? Let’s see.

Hoping for invisibility. Riot studied the page without seeing the words.

Not me. Not today.

“Ryan,” Mrs. Tomlinson said.  “Read the second paragraph.”

Riot’s shoulders flinched toward his ears before breathing relief. Not me.

“Ryan?” She moved closer. The words blurred.

“Riot.” Teacher palmed his shoulder, gently insistent.

If wishes were horses…

That was super-fun and challenging.

Wednesdays will be my Fifty day at least on and off again. I saw an article about an eco-friendly Barbie, that I really want to write about. I can’t leave thoughts trapped up there in my brain, can I? Maybe Friday.
