I started a personal challenge to write a story that is exactly 50 words! Thank you, Boy with a Hat. Not that he set up a formal challenge, but it was his idea. And his writing is worth checking out. So how to proceed? For the most part, I’m using my character inspiration, Dorothy Astoria’s The Name Book. Today, I chose the name Bea. Right away I thought about her struggling with a decision. It didn’t go quite the way I thought it would.

I thank my good friend, Diane, for suggesting I set up a formal Challenge. Almost everything she writes makes me smile. (Except when she makes me cry.) Check out her blog at “On the Border.”

Bea worried her gold band until her finger gnawed. Should she stay or should she go?

She weighed the unknown adversity change promised against the heartache she knew.

“It’s so intense.”

“You’re intensity’s seed.”

“Why stay?  Everyone despises me.”

“I cherish your passion. If you go, I go.”

Bea stayed.

Wednesdays are super-fun and challenging because paring down to exactly 50 words is really hard.

I never know what’s going to flow directly from my brain to my fingertips and onto the virtual page. I started with the desire to use a name starting with B. I’ve always liked the name Beatrice, Bea for short. I like conjuring up someone who can just “be.” This Bea refuses to be still and instead has a bee in her bonnet.
