Fifty Word Wednesday: Macalester

I started a personal challenge to write a story that is exactly 50 words! Thank you, Boy with a Hat. Not that he set up a formal challenge, but it was his idea. And his writing is worth checking out. So please click the link and find out what he’s up to. If you want to begin at my beginning, click here or search in the side panel with the words, “fifty word.”

As soon as I sat down to write, the name Macalester jumped out of my brain. So of course, that’s my starting point. Last week, I jumped on Lady Jabberwocky’s bandwagon with her prompt of the week, “Pumpkin Patch.” I enjoyed that so much, I decided to check out some other prompts. I decided to take a prompt from Sadie, at “Keep it Alive,” Waterfall Wishes. Sadie’s prompt is from September, but I’m sure she won’t mind me borrowing it for today.

I thank my good friend, Diane, for suggesting I set up a formal Challenge. Almost everything she writes makes me smile. (Except when she makes me cry.) Check out her blog at “On the Border.”

“Macalester wondered how in blue blazes he got so far from his bliss.  It started with one wish, a shorter name.

“Call me Mack.”

Next, his gold standard became hep-to-the-jive. He changed his hair, his clothes, his speech, his friends.

Shedding his past, wishes waterfalled his integrity into oblivion.

Just in case you never heard the phrase “hep-to-the-jive” is, here’s a little reminder that I’m sure will make you smile. “Hep-to-the-jive” was off-the-chain, prime, rad, metal, beyond cool.

Wednesdays are super-fun and challenging because paring down to exactly 50 words is really hard.

I never know what’s going to flow directly from my brain to my fingertips and onto the virtual page. This week’s inspiration really surprised me.

I love finding out what you think.
