Break Free! TikTok Reels, and Instagram Have Me

What could you do less of?

Oh my gosh! What immediately came up for me with this writers’ prompt was “scrolling short videos.”

Next, I thought, I’d better give it a little time, and think of something better. I took a little break and finished up some cleaning and decorating, and came back to my computer. What did I do?

Scrolled two TikTok and shared one to Insta!

Yikes! I got a problem.

Back in the 1980s, oh so long ago, I got quite addicted to MTV videos. Do you remember those? Back then, I didn’t have any furniture in the room where I had the TV. Not for financial reasons. I wanted to limit the amount of TV my kids watched. I figured that if they had to sit on the floor, they’d watch less TV.

Well, I’d walk in after breakfast dishes, turn on MTV, a watch a video. Three minutes couldn’t hurt for a quick break, could it. Just two minute more. Three or four videos. I’ll just sit here a couple minutes propped up against the wall. Whoops! It’s time to make lunch.

Now, it’s TikTok, Reels, and Instagram. Geesh!

When I started this addiction, a 30 second video seemed like an innocent bit of humor. I love Mr. Lindsey and his middle school memes. I love Josh Johnson and his humor. Ella Cordova cracks me up with her font humor. (Yes, she has Helvetica and Times New Roman bantering.) I got my own account and got some followers.

It’s gotten out of hand. I understand why these short videos are bad for kids brains. My attention span is getting shorter and shorter. Mr. Lindsay, I already get the whole 6-7 thing, I know what low taper fades are.

It’s time for me to get back to being a quarter-zip citizen. I’m not ready for an aura-neutral tone yet, but it’s time to be more demure.

If you know what that last sentence means, it’s time for you to take a break, too.
