2022 RAK Week #8

My family began practicing Random Acts of Kindness way back when my kids were teens. Now they have teens. This year, I decided to make RAKs my focus. With a twist.

CoCo received a beautiful Act of Kindness this year. The train conductor on her short commute surprised her with a generous Christmas Gift. She smiled for weeks with wonderment and told everyone she knew about the conductor’s kindness. However, I initially responded with suspicion. After a bit of reflection, I remembered an observation I got from a friend.

You are a much better giver than a receiver. It takes some humbleness to receive without the intention of paying back.

My dear friend, Nancy S (circa, 1980)

So with that in mind, I am devoting 2022 to recognizing kindness given. I admit it; I feel vulnerable. I do feel reluctant to share. On the other hand, I like taking the time to recognize kindnesses of all sorts that come my way.

Here are some ways that people were kind to me this week.

Valentine Dinner

“Right this way, Madame Brazil.” CoCo had on an apron with a neatly folded dishtowel over her forearm. She led me and Loved-One to a candle-lit dining room table complete with a rose bouquet. There she served us spaghetti, Ceasar salad, and garlic bread, followed by a giant chocolate chip cookie in the shape of a heart.

That was 25 years ago. CoCo has been doing this every year since.

I finally figured out Madame Brazil is CoCo’s interpretation of mademoiselle. She loves words, and she occasionally makes sense of them in her own unique way. Thus “make-believe” becomes “maple leaf,” “mademoiselle” becomes “Madam Brazil.” As a word-lover myself, I often adopt her new words as my own.

Valentine’s Day is a beautiful day to express love and kindness.

Kind surprises

A box of dark chocolate-covered salted caramels? Um… Yum! I love surprises out of the blue, with no connection to a holiday, or celebration. Not even an apology gift. Just because he knows I like them. Thank you, Loved-One.

Kind inclusions

Rez Reads Book Club is almost ready to go back to live gatherings. One hitch, we’ll lose Rita (Mom to me.) She Zooms in from Michigan. For that reason, almost everyone voted to stay Zoom for a little while longer. So kind, I had to share it with Mom this morning. I love my Book Club, so full of kindness. Well, Mom is pretty easy to love, too, I must admit.

This is the way I feel every time I talk to Mom

The official Random Act of Kindness Day is February 17. Visit the Website here. “The work to create a kinder world never ends. There is no limit on the amount of goodness we can put into the world..”

Use the hashtags #MakeKindnessTheNorm #RAKday #RandomActsofKindnessDay. Most importantly, “In a world where you can be anything…Be kind.” (And be willing to receive the kindness offered.)

I’ll be watching through my rose-colored glasses for opportunities to give a RAK. And I’ll have my antennae up ready to recognize when I get a RAK or see one.
