Fifty Day: Charlene

I started a challenge to write a story that is exactly 50 words! Thank you, Boy with a Hat. Not that he set up a formal challenge, but it was his idea. And his writing is worth checking out. So please click the link and find out what he’s up to. If you want to begin at my beginning, click here or search in the side panel with the words, “fifty day.”

So how to proceed? For the most part, I’m using my character inspiration, Dorothy Astoria’s The Name Book. Today, I turned to Charlene. What an old name! I no longer know anyone with that name. Or do I? I do know a Char. Now that I think about it, I bet her name is Charlene. (This story is not about her.)

Charlene laughs, remembering the piece of plywood dragged from under her bed.  She step-ball-changed and shuffle-stepped for hours, her ringlets bouncing in time with her skort. Just like Shirley Temple.

Today, Charlene demonstrates in her home, Sunset Village. Silver hair perfectly tuned to tapping shoes. A true ambassador, Charlene grins.

HaHaHa! This might be a bit authobiographical. I did love to dance in my skort when I was a child. And I am thinking tap lessons might be a fun way to stay fit. However, I have no plans to demonstrate. None whatsoever.

Wednesdays are super-fun and challenging because paring down to 50 words is really challenging. And so much fun. I never know what’s going to flow directly from my brain to my fingertips and unto the virtual page.

I loving finding out what you think.

In the meantime, I’m finding the gaps and recognizing the themes in my newest novel. This part takes a lot of right-brain work. My work editing and formatting Jim’s &John’s memoir is back in their hands. I can’t wait to see the final product. What are you working on these days?

Wednesdays will be my Fifty day at least on and off again. But then, what’s happening to Ray’s of Hope? I did finally get another chapter written. If you missed it, please check here.
