I started a challenge to write a story that is exactly 50 words! Thank you, Boy with a Hat. Not that he set up a formal challenge, but it was his idea. And his writing is worth checking out. So please click the link and find out what he’s up to.
So how to proceed? For the most part, I’m using my character inspiration, Dorothy Astoria’s The Name Book. This week I’m attending the Historical Fiction Society’s virtual conference. So, for Week 10, I decided to pick a name from the attendee list. It wasn’t exactly random. I saw the name Marilee and immediately thought of a girl I knew in high school. She is the only other Marilee I’ve ever known. I love having a name that I rarely ever run into. I wonder if Marilee does too.
Marilee’s ginger locks cascaded past her chin, head craned over her book.
“Are you in there?”Denny penciled through her hair, his breath soured Cheerios.
“Do you know how to get rid of a cyst?” Marilee’s lids pulsed.
“No.”
“Hit it with a book.”
Marilee took leave. Denny cradled his hand.
That was super-fun and challenging. This Marileee is nothing like the Marilee I knew, but I did know an annoying guy, not unlike Denny. Funny how fingers to keyboard can make memories merge and create new.
Now I’m off to a Master Class in Self Publishing.
Wednesdays will be my Fifty day at least on and off again. I saw an article about an eco-friendly Barbie, that I really want to write about. And now I have some thoughts about pronouns bursting to be freed. I can’t leave thoughts trapped up there in my brain, can I? Friday for sure.
