Good News Monday: Plastic, Doodles and Sofa Cushions

Week Three of good news.

I’m happy to say, that it’s still pretty easy to find good news. Looking for it makes me feel happy.

On a Global Level: China committed to reducing single use plastic by 2025.

China’s top economic planner said it would cut the production and use of plastic over the next five years, helping reduce one of the world’s biggest sources of plastic pollution.

The best part is that their plan to reduce consumption is multi-pronged:

  • Reduce production over the next five years;
  • Introduce a mandatory recycling program;
  • Ban single-use plastic straws by 2020;
  • Ban non-degradable plastic bags in shopping malls and grocery stores by the end of 2020;
  • Ban non-degradable packaging in delivery services in major cities by 2022 and throughout the nation by 2025

On a National Level: It’s MLK Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the first national holiday named for a private citizen and it was made a federal holiday in 1986. The holiday is celebrated on the third Monday in January and is now observed in 50 states.

I know. There are lots of MLK sales going on. That’s not the good news part. There’s lots of good news about the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. The thing that made me smile this week is Google’s doodle. More importantly, what the artist had to say about Martin Luther King Junior.

Screen-shot from Google home page

“Dr. King is remembered as one of the most important human beings in history. In some ways, his level of achievement, compassion, and significance can be daunting.

“But Dr. King, in his own words, reminded us that what he did and stood for was no extraordinary feat—we must rise to our own greatness for the betterment of all mankind.

“He reminded us that no man was ever granted a right that he didn’t fight for. And that when we come together—we as a country, as a people, as human beings—we can overcome anything and make this world a better place.”

On a local level: Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers? Not for Howard.

Howard Kirby bought an old sofa from a Habitat for Humanity Re-sale store. It looks like a pretty ugly couch to me, and apparently the foot-stool was a bit uncomfortable. Howard’s daughter decided to find out why the footstool in her dad’s man-cave was so darned lumpy. The culprit was $43,000 in cash!

The sofa originally belonged to Kim’s grandfather who died in 2019.

Howard kept the (ugly) couch for his man-cave.

Good news is like a breath of fresh air. Do you have any to share?
