In case you’re popping in for the first time, April is National Poetry Writing Month. For the past few years, I set aside my usual writing and focus on poetry. Be forewarned, I’m a horrible poet. Still, I enjoy the challenge of distilling my thoughts to succinct images and form. This year, I decided to keep my usually format intact, and do a mashup of subject and poetry.
So I dedicate my Monday post to Gratitude. What a great way to start the workweek.
And…
Today’s prompt from NaPoWriMo.net makes me happy.
Today’s prompt springs from the form known as the aubade. These are morning poems, about dawn and daybreak. Many aubades take the form of lovers’ morning farewells, but . . . today is Monday. So why not try a particularly Mondayish aubade – perhaps you could write it while listening to the Bangles’ iconic Manic Monday? Or maybe you could take in Phillip Larkin’s grim Aubade for inspiration (though it may just make you want to go back to bed). Your Monday aubade could incorporate lovey-dovey aspects, or it could opt to forego them until you’ve had your coffee.
So here’s my Gratitude Monday Aubade mashup.
Easter Monday Gratitude
Tatted balloons soaked in syrup, dried until a nest; Eggs: Spritzed, carmeled, Cadburied, Malt-specked, Boiled and deviled. Sweet Joy buried in grasses, before heads lay down to rest. Sun-drenched morning wakes rumpled, grumpled, and disheveled. Shed our wraps like so much burial cloth wrested. Join together by Faith, Hope to share Agape Vessel. Reminds us that the tomb is empty and we are blessed.
Childhood memories flood the senses:
Holy Communion of extended-blended-familied tagged-along.
End the Forty days and Forty nights with incense.
Blossoming hats, dresses, shirts, ties like songs.
Grandsons' embrace in church spontaneous.
Ham, baskets, chocolate, beans, bunnies, mashed: all gone.
Tradition repeated by generations ever-endless.
